August 7 – After 25 years at Bayern Munich, German football legend Thomas Müller will play for the Vancouver Whitecaps in Major League Soccer for the rest of the 2025 season.
Müller’s contract with Bayern expired at the end of last season, ending an association with the German champions that lasted for more than two decades, with his move to America’s top-flight now confirmed.
Vancouver will have the option of signing Müller as a designated player for the 2026 MLS season. Each franchise is allowed three DPs whose wages are not counted against their salary cap.
“Thomas is a world-class player – the ultimate Raumdeuter ‘Interpreter of space’ – known for his elite chance creation, unmatched spatial awareness, and relentless off-the-ball movement,” said Axel Schuster, Whitecaps CEO and Sporting Director. “He not only brings a winning pedigree and exceptional football intelligence, but also a tireless work ethic that will elevate the entire team.
“Thomas is a natural leader whose passion for the game is infectious. This is a statement signing by our club and our ownership – a transformative moment for our club and our city.”
Müller will bring a wealth of experience to the Canadian outfit, having won the Champions League twice with Bayern and the 2014 World Cup with Germany. He gained worldwide fame for his unique playing style, always finding pockets of space on the field through great positioning and movement.
“I’ve heard great things about the city, but first and foremost I’m coming to win,” said Müller. “I’ve had great conversations with Axel Schuster and Jesper Sørensen, and now I can’t wait to play in front of the supporters and to see all of the fans come out to BC Place as we head towards the playoffs.”
The Whitecaps are enjoying a stellar season, sitting in second place, a point behind San Diego, in the Western Conference with ten matches remaining in the regular season.
