Welsh FA commissions review of women’s game as it builds on legacy of Euro 2025 debut

August 7 – The success of the Wales Women’s team participation at their first Euro 2025 finals in Switzerland this summer has sparked the Welsh FA (FAW) to commission an analysis and review of the top tier of the women’s game domestically, the Adran Premier.

In Switzerland the Welsh were drawn into the toughest group with England, France and the Netherlands. Despite being paired with three of the strongest nations in the tournament – England were eventual winners while France lost in the semi-final – the Welsh competed creditably and brought an enthusiasm to the tournament that was mirrored both domestically and via their travelling fans.

Consultants Portas have now been commissioned to lead a review process, with a focus on on the overall league quality of the Adran Premier, community and fan engagement and the current commercial landscape and potential for the league.

The FAW said that transforming and elevating the women’s game is part of their commitment to ensuring a legacy following their Euro 2025 debut.

Bethan Woolley, FAW Women & Girls’ Football Strategic Lead, said: “The review of the Adran Premier comes at a pivotal moment for Welsh women’s football. While we are witnessing growth across a number of areas within the women’s game in Wales, it is essential to ensure the continued development of the full pathway. We are excited to share the vision of announcing an Adran Premier strategy in 2026, with the aim to strengthen and elevate the domestic game in Wales.”

The report will form the basis of an athlete-centred high performance strategy for the Adran Premier, that the FAW says it will present in the spring of 2026.

Jack Sharp, FAW Head of Domestic Leagues, said: “The UEFA Women’s EURO has been a once in a generation catalystfor the development of women’s and girls’ football in Wales. Our continued investment in the Adran Premier to carve out a long term vision for the league stands as a central pillar to the legacy of Cymru competing out in Switzerland this summer. It is vital that talented footballers in Wales can see a clear and sustainable pathway to a career within ourdomestic game through the next phase of growth for the league.”
