August 5 – Former AC Milan and Italy captain Franco Baresi has undergone surgery on his lung to remove a pulmonary nodule, AC Milan have revealed.
The nodule, which is a small growth in the lung, was discovered during a routine medical examination. Thankfully, it was identified early, which has allowed doctors to opt for a minimally invasive surgical procedure. The club noted that the battle is not over yet, but the early signs are promising.
The 65-year-old remains the heartbeat of the club even after retiring in 1997, with the former captain currently operating as Honorary Vice President. A product of the club’s youth system, Baresi went on to become widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders the game has ever seen, playing more than 700 times for Milan and winning six Serie A titles and three European Cups,
In a statement on their official website, the club said: “AC Milan announces that, following routine medical checks, our Honorary Vice President Franco Baresi was found to have a pulmonary nodule. It was decided that the best course of action was to remove it with a minimally invasive surgical procedure.
“The operation went well, and his recovery has been free of complications. Franco has since been assessed by an oncology specialist, who recommended a consolidative course of immunotherapy.
“The entire Board of Directors, Club Management, employees and staff, the coaching team, and all the men’s and women’s players at AC Milan send Franco their heartfelt wishes for a swift and full recovery. Captain, we are all with you!”
Italian Media has rallied around the former Italy Captain, with the words ‘Forza Capitano’ littering the front pages of regional newspapers.
“It’s not just Milan that’s behind you,” wrote Tuttosport.
Baresi issued his own message to supporters, saying: “Dear fans, I just want to let you know that it will take a little time to get back to full strength.
“Thank you to AC Milan and to all of you for your support. A big hug, with affection.”
