Croatian government gives €2m in aid to Hajduk Split to repair storm damaged stadium

July 27 – The Croatian government has awarded a €2 million grant to Hajduk Split to repair storm damage to the Pljud stadium.

In early July, Croatia was hit by a severe storm that caused significant damage to one of the country’s largest stadiums, with the roof of the facility being the most severely affected part of the structure. The club’s training ground was also hit by the storm.

Last week, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković (pictured centre), together with Mayor of Split Tomislav Šuta, personally visited the Pljud stadium to inspect the damage.

During the tour, the Prime Minister and the Mayor were informed about the progress of the damage repair works, for which the Government has pitched in with €2 million in aid. The President of HNK Hajduk, Ivan Bilić, explained the current state of the stadium and plans for further renovation and improving safety for spectators.

Prime Minister Plenković expressed satisfaction with the speed of the repair works and emphasised the importance of Poljud not only as a sports facility, but also as a symbol of Split and Dalmatia. Mayor Šuta thanked the Government for the quick response and support provided.

Hajduk’s new technical director, Ivan Rakitić – a recent club player and legendary Croatian national team member – presented the Prime Minister with a Hajduk jersey as a token of gratitude for the support provided.

Three weeks ago, Hajduk Split’s biggest rival in Croatia, Dinamo Zagreb, also extended an offer of support in a rare moment of solidarity between the clubs.
