July 25 – With the final to come on Sunday, Euro 2025 has smashed the all-time attendance tournament record with 623,088 supporters passing the turnstiles, surpassing the previous record held by Euro 2022.
Even before Euro 2025 kicked off, organisers had sold more than 600,000 tickets to topple the 574,875 tickets sold in 2022 in England.
Throughout the group stages, records fell. In Basel, Switzerland – Norway, the host’s opening match, was a record crowd at a Swiss women’s national team match. At the same St. Jakob Park, Germany – Denmark drew 34,165 fans, the highest attendance at a group game not involving the host nation and the most spectators to attend a women’s football match in Switzerland.
Twenty two out of 24 group matches sold out, organisers said. In all, the group stage had a record aggregate attendance for a Women’s European Championship of 461,582. Six of the top ten all-time Women’s Euro attendances were registered in Switzerland.
After the first semi-final between England and Italy in Geneva, the aggregate attendance moved past 600,000 and the 2022 tally of 574,875.
After Spain’s 1-0 extra time victory against Germany at Zurich’s Letzigrund, 623,088 had watched the action unfold.
That figure should pass 650,000 when Basel’s St Jakob Park, the tournament’s biggest venue, hosts the final between England and Spain on Sunday.
With Switzerland not boasting stadiums like Old Trafford and Wembley, the flagship venues of Euro 2022 with England’s national stadium hosting 87,192 fans for the tournament’s final, some had questioned the wisdom of low-capacity stadiums, in particular in both Thun and Sion, but Swiss fans and international supporters embraced the tournament from day one. They rode the wave, aided by the Nati’s run to the quarterfinals.
The Swiss have set a high bar for the hosts of Euro 2029, with Germany and the Nordic pair of Denmark and Sweden considered the frontrunners in the bidding race for the tournament.
