July 9 – Denmark manager Andrée Jeglertz has questioned the referee following his side’s 2-1 defeat to Germany and the injury to Emma Snerle.
In the 56th minute, Germany’s Lea Schuller scored the match winner, but her goal was preceded by Sneller’s head injury after she took a ball square in the face. She went down, but the referee didn’t stop play. It was a controversial moment that led Jeglertz to question the match official Catarina Campos.
“That is a situation for which we need to make the rules clear because if you have a player that gets a serious head injury, my view is that you need to blow the whistle,” said Jeglertz. “You need to take responsibility, you need to do something as a referee. I don’t understand why she doesn’t stop the game in that situation.”
“We have the same situation in the first half – not exactly the same situation but we have another player that is down with a head injury and she didn’t stop the play at that time either. I question those decisions.”
IFAB’s practical guidelines state: “The safety of the players is of paramount importance and the referee should facilitate the work of the medical personnel, especially in the case of a serious injury and/or an assessment of a head injury. This will include respecting and assisting with agreed assessment/treatment protocols.”
Snerle was substituted and Germany controlled the rest of the second half to ensure the three points. “The performance was good in general, working extremely hard,” reflected Jeglertz. “It is a very good German team. It is about winning and taking points.”
Following Sweden’s 3-0 win over Poland, Denmark and Jeglertz have been eliminated from Euro 2025. On Saturday, they will wrap up their tournament against debutants Poland in Lucerne.
After the tournament, Jeglertz will become the new manager of English Women’s Super League club Manchester City. He previously managed Umea and the national team of Finland.
