Football bodies dominate first Sports Transparency Index

June 20 – Two clubs and one league made it into the top tier of the just launched Sport Transparency Index, a benchmarking tool to assess transparency and good governance across the European Sport ecosystem.

AC Milan and Juventus were the leading clubs that topped the ranking while Germany’s Bundesliga was first among leagues. All three entities scored 14 ranking points and shared the top position with six other sports bodies.

Real Madrid were ranked equal 10th on 13 points.

There were 275 football clubs in the ranking that covered a total 646 sports bodies. The French and Greek federations were the highest ranked FAs at equal 10th.

The bottom ranked football body is French club Guingamp with zero ranking points.

The Sport Transparency Index, a project led by sports integrity group SIGA, focuses on European sport stakeholders, and was co-funded by the European Union through the Erasmus+ programme.

The evaluation was conducted using a set of 15 Universal Transparency Indicators, which were developed via research and stakeholder consultation. All data used for the assessments was sourced exclusively from publicly available information on official websites.

There are no English sports entities or clubs ranked. The UK is outside the European Union and the project was financed by an EU Erasmus grant.

The project was co-funded by the European Union through the Erasmus+ programme. Compiled with a total budget of approximately €400,000 over a 30-month period. SIGA said it will be updated annually.

To achieve the ranking points, the ‘Transparency Indicators’ were organised under three main themes:

Organization Domain: Governance and organizational structure, Code of Conduct, Board Membership, Membership (in organizations), Lists all sponsors/Partners, General Assembly.

Operational Domain: Equal opportunities and Diversity Policy, Data Privacy and Security Policy, Whistleblower Policy, Stakeholder engagement/Consultation Policy, Sport Betting Policy.

Financial Domain: Compliance with Accounting Standards, Financial Disclosure and Reporting, Procurement Policy, Anti-Corruption Policy.
