Kansas City Current owners Ballard Capital buy Denmark’s HB Køge Women

May 30 – U.S. ownership of English Premier League clubs has become commonplace, and now women’s football is emerging as the next frontier. Ballard Capital, led by Angie and Chris Long (pictured) – owners of the Kansas City Current in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) – has acquired Danish club HB Køge Women.

The Longs entered professional soccer in 2020 when they purchased the Kansas City Current, demonstrating an immediate commitment to elevating women’s football. Their ownership has been transformative for the sport, as they built the first purpose-built training center for a women’s professional team and constructed CPKC Stadium – the first venue specifically designed for women’s professional soccer.

This investment philosophy of creating dedicated infrastructure for women’s sports has set a new standard in the NWSL.

Previously operating as both men’s and women’s teams under the Capelli Sport umbrella, HB Køge Women recently became an independent entity following the legal separation of the two clubs.

The Longs’ international expansion reflects their proven approach to developing women’s football. According to their public statement: “We’re bringing a proven model to a new market. The Danish league is competitive, and HB Køge has demonstrated it can win. Our focus is on strengthening that base and building a top-tier youth academy in Scandinavia.”

Founded in 2009 through the merger of Køge Boldklub and Herfølge Boldklub, HB Køge Women has established itself as a dominant force in Danish football. The club, located approximately 30 minutes south of Copenhagen, has achieved remarkable success in recent years.

Despite Capelli Sport no longer owning the club, the manufacturer will continue as the kit and athletic wear partner. “We are incredibly appreciative to George Altirs and Capelli Sport for their investment and for making this acquisition possible,” the Longs said. “We see continuity in key relationships as a strategic advantage.”
