Mexico and US plan pre-Gold Cup warm-ups as 14 nations battle for final seven slots

March 7 – Turkey and Switzerland will be the pre-Gold Cup warm-ups for Mexico and the USA before the Concacaf tournament kicks off this summer.

Mexico will play on Switzerland at Rice-Eccles Stadium at the University of Utah on June 7, and Turkey on June 10 at Kenan Stadium at the University of North Carolina.

While not officially announced, the USA look set to face Turkey on June 7 in East Hartford, Connecticut, and Switzerland on June 10 at a still-to-be-decided venue.

Both Switzerland and Turkey provide strong opposition for the two hosts of the 2026 World Cup. Switzerland and Turkey both had strong runs at the 2024 European Championships in Germany and are expected to qualify comfortably for the 48-team World Cup in 2026.

In the past Mexico have struggled against Switzerland, losing four times against one win and one draw.  Mexico have never played Turkey.

The 16-nation Gold Cup kicks off June 14 in the US and Canada, with the final to be played in Houston on July 6.

Canada, Curaçao, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, Mexico, Panama, Saudi Arabia (guest team) and the US have all qualified.

The final seven spots will be decided by the playoffs this month:

  • Costa Rica vs. Belize
  • Jamaica vs. St Vincent and the Grenadines
  • Honduras vs. Bermuda
  • Guatemala vs. Guyana
  • Trinidad and Tobago vs. Cuba
  • Martinique vs. Suriname
  • Nicaragua vs. Guadeloupe
