June 15 – Diego Maradona’s life was honoured by Conmebol in a special tribute ahead of Argentina’s Copa America opener against Chile that finished 1-1.
No fans were present at the Nilton Santos stadium in Rio de Janeiro but a three-minute video tribute to the great man who died at age 60 last November. Centrrepice of an impressive lightshow was a video and a hologram featuring Maradona
“We are paying our respects to one of the greatest players in history,” Conmebol said in a statement.
The video tribute was expected to take place in Argentina, but the country was dropped as tournament co-host with Brazil stepping in at the 11thhour.
