Portland buys training ground for $25m

July 2 – Sometimes the most important transfers happen off the pitch. The Portland Timbers just made their biggest acquisition in years – not a designated player, but something more valuable: 13 acres of Oregon real estate that signals serious intentions about competing at the highest level.

The $25 million purchase of their training facility from Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District isn’t just real estate – it’s a statement of ambition that reverberates through everything the Timbers are building.

When MLS clubs own their training facilities, they control their future. No lease negotiations, no working around someone else’s schedule, no wondering if long-term plans align with your landlord’s vision.

“Today’s announcement of the purchase of the Portland Timbers Performance Center represents a critically important investment in the future of the club. We now control a 13-acre footprint that provides us plenty of space to build a best-in-class training home for the Portland Timbers and its entire development pipeline,” said Timbers owner Merritt Paulson.

That phrase “entire development pipeline” is key. This isn’t just about the first team – it’s creating an ecosystem where talent gets identified, developed, and nurtured from youth levels to MLS. In modern football, that infrastructure is everything.

“I would like to thank the leadership at Tualatin Hills Parks & Recreation District for their continued partnership and willingness to make this purchase possible,” Paulson added.

The expansion plans reveal real vision. A second grass field brings the total to three – crucial for training multiple teams without conflicts. The viewing deck shows they’re thinking beyond training; they’re creating a showcase facility for scouts, fans, and partners.

The potential indoor practice surface addresses Oregon’s unpredictable weather. When other teams deal with conditions, Portland maintains consistency.

“Today is an exciting day for everyone involved with the Portland Timbers. This further investment in the Performance Center shows great ambition from the Paulson family to continue the evolution at this club,” said general manager Ned Grabavoy.

“This decision provides us the ability to grow and expand an already elite professional training site. Our staff and players throughout the club are thrilled for what the future holds, as we continue elevating the standards of a high-level performance and development center.”

The $1 million donation to THPRD for underserved youth sports isn’t charity – it’s community investment. Smart clubs understand that goodwill translates to fan loyalty, which translates to revenue.

The $40 million total investment, including previous improvements, is not MLS average but a commitment to their belief that they can develop talent that justifies the training infrastructure.
