Pulisic, Musah and Robinson out of US team for Gold Cup; McKennie, Weah and Reyna to play CWC

May 22 – When Mauricio Pochettino (pictured) unveiled his 27-player United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) roster for the upcoming Concacaf Gold Cup, the conversation inevitably centered on who wasn’t there rather than who was. In an era where player welfare collides head-on with international ambition, the Argentine manager finds himself navigating perhaps his most challenging selection dilemma yet.

The Gold Cup represents Pochettino’s final opportunity to assess his squad in competitive action before next year’s World Cup – a fact that makes the enforced absences all the more significant. FIFA’s controversial new Club World Cup had already claimed its first high-profile casualties, with Juventus duo Weston McKennie and Timothy Weah ruled out alongside Borussia Dortmund’s enigmatic Giovanni Reyna as the club’s refused to release them for national duty.

But it’s the voluntary withdrawals that truly highlight modern football’s unsustainable demands. Christian Pulisic, Antonee Robinson, and Yunus Musah have all been granted rest – a decision that speaks volumes about the physical toll being extracted from elite players.

“Christian and his team approached the Federation and the coaching staff about the possibility of stepping back this summer, given the amount of matches he has played in the past two years at both the club and international level with very little break,” explained U.S. Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker. “After thoughtful discussions and careful consideration, we made the collective decision that this is the right moment for him to get the rest he needs.”

The numbers tell the story. AC Milan’s Pulisic has accumulated over 3,500 minutes this campaign while battling recurring injuries. Fulham’s Robinson has featured in 37 Premier League matches during his standout season in England’s top flight. These aren’t luxury absences – they’re medical necessities.

The absences mean the Pochettino will be without five first choice starters, arguably six if Reyna is on form.

Pochettino, pragmatic as ever, backs the difficult choices. “Many people can say it’s really important for us to be all together for the last time before the World Cup,” he acknowledged. “We decided the best for him, the best for the team, the best for the national team is the decision that we made.”

The timing couldn’t be more challenging. The USMNT remains in something of a tailspin following their disastrous Concacaf Nations League campaign, where defeats to Panama and Canada exposed fundamental weaknesses. Pochettino desperately needs to demonstrate progress, yet finds himself working with a significantly weakened hand.

However, crisis often breeds opportunity. The enforced absences create genuine chances for fringe players to stake their World Cup claims. Names like Diego Luna, and Patrick Agyemang now have the platform to prove they belong at international level.

USA 27-player Gold Cup roster:

GOALKEEPERS: Matt Freese (New York City FC), Patrick Schulte (Columbus Crew), Zack Steffen (Colorado Rapids), Matt Turner (Crystal Palace)

DEFENDERS: Max Arfsten (Columbus Crew), Sergiño Dest (PSV Eindhoven), Alex Freeman (Orlando City), DeJuan Jones (San Jose Earthquakes), Mark McKenzie (Toulouse), Tim Ream (Charlotte FC), Chris Richards (Crystal Palace), Miles Robinson (FC Cincinnati)

MIDFIELDERS: Brenden Aaronson (Leeds United), Tyler Adams (Bournemouth), Sebastian Berhalter (Vancouver Whitecaps), Johnny Cardoso (Real Betis), Luca de la Torre (San Diego FC), Diego Luna (Real Salt Lake), Jack McGlynn (Houston Dynamo), Quinn Sullivan (Philadelphia Union), Malik Tillman (PSV Eindhoven), Sean Zawadzki (Columbus Crew)

FORWARDS: Patrick Agyemang (Charlotte FC), Folarin Balogun (Monaco), Damion Downs (FC Köln), Brian White (Vancouver Whitecaps), Haji Wright (Coventry City)

The Gold Cup may not feature America’s strongest available XI, but it might just reveal the depth and character that will prove crucial when the World Cup arrives. Sometimes necessity forces the discoveries that change everything.
