Brazilian court strips Ednaldo of CBF presidency over forged signature

May 16 – Ednaldo Rodrigues, president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and member of the FIFA Council, has been removed from office by a Brazilian court for the second time.

Moments after Rodrigues said that he felt secure about his future at the CBF on the sidelines of the FIFA congress in Paraguay, a Rio Court ordered his removal, arguing that the agreement which confirmed him in the position is annulled due to a forged signature by Colonel Nunes on a document that legitimised Rodrigues’s 2022 election.

Last week, congresswoman Daniela Carneiro had asked the country’s Supreme Court (STF) to remove Rodrigues from his role because of an alleged forged signature by former CBF President Coronel Nunel on a document that legitimised Rodrigues’s 2022 election. The Supreme Court and judge Gilmar Mendes, an ally of Rodrigues, sent the case to Rio de Janeiro.

Rodrigues has been fighting for survival for weeks after Brazilian magazine Piaui published an investigation into his financial mismanagement at the CBF. Earlier this week Brazil announced Italy’s Carlo Ancelotti as their first foreigner manager, which seemed to bring relief to Rodrigues.

Fernando Sarney will take over as interim administrator and will stage new elections. A veteran of the game and son of former Brazilian president José Sarney, Sarney served as a FIFA Council member from 2015 to 2023 when Rodrigues manoeuvred to replace Sarney in FIFA’s main decision-making body.

At the time of writing, the CBF had not yet issued a statement.
